KULKURIN TAIVAS
VILHO on
67-vuotias äreä ja yksinäinen leski, jonka eristynyt
arki muuttuu eräänä perjantai-iltana: Viedessään
pyykkiä kerrostalon ullakon naruille hän löytää
vintin nurkasta AHDIN, 45-vuotiaan aran pultsarin. Vilho
suuttuu ja alkaa ajaa Ahtia pihalle.
Pian hän kuitenkin muuttaa mieltään, osin säälistä,
osin yksinäisyyttään. Hän kutsuu Ahdin sisään. Ahti
ottaa epäröiden Vilhon karkean vieraanvaraisuuden
vastaan.
Erikoinen miestenilta kehittyy: Kahvin ja hernekeiton
ääressä Vilho alkaa purkaa Ahdille sydäntään ja
Ahti kuuntelee. Vieraan lähtöaikeet Vilho haihduttaa
vodkapulloa vilauttamalla. Päädytään saunaan, jonka
Vilho on asuntoonsa rakentanut.
Selviää, kuinka kumpikin on menettänyt
perhekontaktinsa tavallaan. Vilho tuntee syyllisyyttä,
koska ei ollut tukena Sirkan, vaimonsa sairastaessa. Ahti
mainitsee aikuisen tyttärensä Kaarinan, jota on
seurannut etäältä, muttei ole enää uskaltanut
tavata.
Iltasuunnitelmien kehkeytyessä
Ahtia alkaa löyly huimata. Huonokuntoinen mies pyörtyy.
Naureskellen Vilho yrittää virvoittaa Ahtia
jääkylmällä vedellä - kohtalokkain tuloksin: Ahti
kuolee sydänkohtaukseen.
Vilho miettii kauhuissaan, mitä tekisi asuntoonsa
kuolleelle pultsarille. Hän päättää siistiä ja
pukea Ahdin sekä itsensä parhaimpiinsa: tie vie
kaupungille.
Vilho työntää Ahtia katujen halki vaimonsa
potkukelkassa lauantai-illan juhlijoita vältellen. Hän
kuskaa Ahdin huoltoaseman kahvilaan, Kaarinan luo.
Nähtyään Kaarinan vuodenikäisen pojan Vilho ei
kuitenkaan henno kertoa Ahdin kuolemasta, vaan
välittääkin Ahdin haikailemat onnittelut isältä
tyttärelle. Kaarina sulaa töykeydestä tyyneen hymyyn.
Matka päättyy Sirkan haudalle. Vilho jatkaa matkaansa
uutena miehenä, vailla vanhaa ärtymystä, ja jättää
vainajat tutustumaan toisiinsa.
DRIFTER'S HEAVEN VILHO is a
67-year-old grumpy and lonely widower, living in a block
of flats in the heart of Helsinki. His isolated routines
take a turn one Friday night: As he's taking the laundry
to dry up on the attic, he finds a timid wino, AHTI,
keeping a nest in a small dark corner. Vilho gets angry
and starts hauling Ahti away. However, he changes his
mind, partly out of pity, partly to ease his own
loneliness. Hesitantly, Ahti chooses to accept Vilho's
crude hospitality.
A peculiar old men's night starts to unfold. Ahti enjoys
a cup of coffee and a bowl of pea soup and listens Vilho
to unburden his heart. Ahti's intentions of leaving are
brushed away by a bottle of vodka. Eventually, Finnish as
they are, the men end up in a sauna, recently built in
the apartment by Vilho.
We soon find out, how both of them have lost touch with
their families. Vilho bears guilt for not being there for
his wife SIRKKA during her terminal illness. Ahti tells
of his daughter KAARINA, whom he has followed from a
distance - being too ashamed of himself to confront her
face to face.
Suddenly, while Vilho's making plans for the evening,
Ahti gets dizzy by the heat and steam. A weak man, he
faints. The amused Vilho carries Ahti under the shower.
He tries to resucitate him with ice cold water, with
fatal results: Ahti comes to, but immediately dies of a
heart attack.
Now
Vilho is facing a problem. He has to figure out what to
do with a dead wino in his apartment. He decides to dress
up both Ahti and himself in his two best suits. The set
off to the night in the city.
Vilho pushes Ahti in his wife's old kick sled, carefully
avoiding the Friday night party people. He hauls Ahti to
a gas station cafeteria, to Kaarina. However, having seen
Kaarina's year-old baby, he can't bring himself to tell
her about her father's death. Instead, he just gives her
Ahti's congratulations on account of the baby - her
father's best wishes. Kaarina melts from her initial
iciness into a warm, quiet smile.
They end up at Sirkka's grave. There, Vilho continues on
to the night a changed man, without the old grumpiness.
He leaves the deceased together, to get acquainted to one
another.
